  Griffonia simplicifolia Extract

Griffonia Seed comes from the beans of a vine native to Africa.  In African folk medicine, Griffonia Seed is reputed to be an aphrodisiac, as well as an antibiotic and a remedy for diarrhea, vomiting and stomachache.  Recent research suggests that Griffonia Seed raises serotonin levels in the brain.  Serotonin is important in regulating brain chemistry and is especially important in problems such as depression, insomnia and eating disorders. Theoretically, supplementing with Griffonia Seed can raise serotonin levels and provide relief from the symptoms of depression and insomnia.  Griffonia Seed may also regulate appetite through the increase in serotonin.  This activity can lead to weight reduction in overweight persons, while helping to normalize the weight of people suffering from anorexia nervosa.  Griffonia Seed has also been used in treating fibromyalgia and chronic headaches in order to reduce pain.

  Uses Of Griffonia Simplicifolia

Use of an extract of Griffonia, in particular of Griffonia simplicifolia, in a cosmetic or dermatological preparation for attenuating the pigmentation of the skin and of superficial body growths.

This cosmetic or dermatological preparation may also contain any of the following products: at least one other active depigmenting product, at least one substance for filtering or blocking B and/or A ultraviolet radiation, at least one anti-inflammatory product, at least one agent encouraging flaking. It contains from 0.05 to 20% by weight of an extract of Griffonia simplicifolia.

It has been used, as an adjunct to medical care, for depression and fibromyalgia.

In addition, it is commonly used for mild insomnia, migraine headaches and as a weight loss therapy. It has been demonstrated to reduce the pain and anxiety associated with fibromyalgia. In some migraine populations, 5-HTP was found to be as effective in treatment and prevention as beta-blockers or methysergide. These results have not been consistent in all trials. 5-HTP seems to work for mild depression.

It is effective in uncomplicated insomnia. At higher doses, 5-HTP has been shown to reduce appetite and promote weight loss.
